More than 15% of children and teens are considered "at risk" for becoming overweight. It is estimated that about half of overweight school-aged children and teens will remain obese into adulthood." Partnership in a Healthier America (2011) reported that childhood obesity threatens one third of American children's future and annually contributes $14 billion indirectly to health expenses that continue to soar. J-S.T.E.M. Robotics integrates the sport of rope skipping (jump rope), Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (J-S.T.E.M.) education concepts in a bio-inspiring engineering environment. Students explore scientific processes, engineering design, observe and replicate movement, forces, speed, velocity and how motors and super machines work while having fun using a jump rope and innovative wellness activities. J-S.T.E.M. Robotics aims to educate in both formal and informal middle grade programs through integrated learning that focuses on three key objectives: •Increase health awareness and reduce childhood obesity through the sport of rope skipping •Reduce the achievement gap by broadening participation of students traditionally underrepresented in S.T.E.M. related careers and post-secondary studies •Provide the highest quality of education that embraces innovative programs that force scholars to solve problems that prepare them for realistic worldwide concerns through integrated rope skipping and S.T.E.M. education.
